The Abode of Clouds —
Unlike Any Other Destination
Meghalaya is a small state with an outsized soul. Rain-sculpted gorges, centuries-old living bridges woven from tree roots, emerald lakes with turquoise clarity literally meaning "abode of clouds" in Sanskrit, the place lives up to every word. Here's why it belongs on your travel list.
Meghalaya's Signature Wonder
Living Root Bridges of Nongriat
The Khasi tribe grows bridges from the aerial roots of rubber trees — guiding them over streams for decades until they're strong enough to walk on. The Double Decker Root Bridge near Nongriat village is a natural wonder found nowhere else on Earth. Some are over 500 years old and still growing stronger each year.
Waterfalls & Cherrapunji
Nohkalikai — India's tallest plunge waterfall at 340 m — thunders year-round into a jade pool below. Mawsynram holds the Earth's record for highest annual rainfall. Seven Sisters Falls, Elephant Falls, and Bishop Falls complete one of the most dramatic waterfall circuits on the subcontinent.
See Cherrapunji itinerary
India's Clearest River
Dawki — The Crystal River
The Umngot river at Dawki is so transparent that boats appear to float on air, the riverbed visible in perfect clarity below. Voted one of India's most surreal landscapes, a boat ride here is among the most photographed moments in all of Northeast India.
See Dawki experienceShillong — The Scotland of the East
Shillong pulses with live music, colonial-era cathedrals, Ward's Lake, and Sunday morning bazaars. The "Rock Capital of India" offers one of the warmest, most cosmopolitan welcomes in Northeast India — a perfect base for your entire Meghalaya tour.
Explore Shillong
Asia's Cleanest Village
Mawlynnong Village
Named Asia's cleanest village, Mawlynnong is a lesson in living harmoniously with nature. Bamboo sky walks offer views across to Bangladesh, and a nearby living root bridge at Riwai rounds off one of Meghalaya's most charming day trips.
Visit Mawlynnong
Asia's Longest Caves
Caves & Wild Biodiversity
Krem Liat Prah is one of Asia's longest natural cave systems. Nongkhyllem Wildlife Sanctuary shelters clouded leopards, fishing cats, and over 300 bird species. Meghalaya's biodiversity per square kilometre rivals anywhere in the world — a naturalist's paradise.
Explore caves & wildlifeAll of this — in one perfectly crafted Meghalaya tour
Our 7-day signature package covers every highlight above. Custom itineraries available.
Meghalaya Through the Seasons
Meghalaya wears a different face every season from thundering monsoon waterfalls to crystal-clear winter skies. Choose yours.
Peak Season — The Golden Window
The single best time to visit Meghalaya. Post-monsoon greenery is at its richest, waterfalls still thunder at full strength, skies are crystal-clear, roads are dry, and temperatures are perfectly comfortable for trekking and sightseeing.
Best for: First-time visitors, families, photographers, honeymooners, and group tours. Every attraction is at its finest.
Winter Clarity — Fog & Frozen Light
Cold nights (3–8°C) and fog-draped mornings create some of Meghalaya's most dramatic photography conditions. Days are sunny and clear. The valleys fill with low mist at dawn utterly magical. Pack warm layers and fleece.
Best for: Photographers, couples, solo travellers, and those who enjoy quiet, less-crowded destinations. Dawki is at its most transparent in winter.
Monsoon Magic — Rain at Full Force
This is Meghalaya at its most primal. Waterfalls erupt to 10× their normal power, forests turn electric green, and the world's wettest place truly earns its name. Roads can be challenging and some treks are closed but for rain lovers it is spectacular beyond words.
Best for: Experienced travellers, waterfall chasers, and those who specifically want the dramatic monsoon experience. Not recommended for first-timers or families with young children.
Spring & Summer — Quiet & Affordable
Warm and pleasant with orchids and wildflowers in bloom across the hills. Waterfalls are diminished but sightseeing is still rewarding. The big upside: far fewer tourists, lower hotel rates, and a more intimate experience of local life in Shillong and the villages.
Best for: Budget-conscious travellers, culture seekers, those who prefer uncrowded destinations, and corporate group outings looking for value-for-money Meghalaya tour packages.

1
Capital City
Shillong
Meghalaya's vibrant capital sits at 1,525 m amid pine-covered hills. Wander the colonial-era Ward's Lake, browse Sunday bazaars, visit Shillong Peak for 360° valley panoramas, and catch a live band at one of its legendary music bars. Shillong is the natural base and gateway for your entire Meghalaya tour.
Cherrapunji
India's tallest plunge waterfall drops 340 m into a jade pool. Explore the illuminated Mawsmai limestone cave, stand at Eco Park's edge above one of Earth's deepest gorges, and catch Seven Sisters Falls in full monsoon flood.
3
Must-Visit
Dawki River
The Umngot river's legendary clarity makes boats appear to float on air. Straddles the India–Bangladesh border. Best in winter (Oct–Feb) when the water is at its most transparent. A 30-minute boat ride here produces photos that travellers treasure for life.
Mawsynram
Officially the world's wettest place with over 11,000 mm of annual rainfall, Mawsynram's atmosphere is uniquely other-worldly. Combine with a visit to Mawjymbuin Cave — home to a Shiva stalagmite that drips with mineral water year-round and is revered by locals.
5
Adventure Trek
Nongriat & Mawlynnong
The jungle descent to Nongriat is one of Meghalaya's great adventures — 3,000 stone steps through thick forest to the legendary Double Decker Root Bridge with its natural swimming pool. Nearby Mawlynnong, Asia's cleanest village, offers bamboo sky walks with views into Bangladesh.

Everything You Need to Know
Planning your Meghalaya tour? Find answers to the most common questions travellers ask us — before they book, and while they're on the road.
October – November is the sweet spot — lush post-monsoon green, waterfalls still powerful, perfect trekking weather (12–20°C), and all roads in excellent condition. First-time visitors should plan for this window.
December – February brings crisp, cold days (3–15°C) and spectacular foggy mornings — a paradise for photographers. Dawki river is at its most transparent in winter.
June – September (monsoon) is dramatic — waterfalls thunder at full power — but roads can get challenging and some treks close. Best for experienced adventurers only.
We recommend a minimum of 6 nights / 7 days for a complete Meghalaya experience — covering Shillong, Cherrapunji, Nongriat, Dawki, Mawlynnong, and Mawsynram comfortably.
A 3–4 day Express tour is possible for Shillong and Cherrapunji only. For the Meghalaya + Assam Grand Explorer circuit, plan 9–10 days. Rushed itineraries miss the magic — we always recommend building in breathing room.
Yes — Meghalaya is consistently rated among India's safest states for tourists. The Khasi community is matrilineal — women hold significant social standing — and is extremely respectful to female visitors. Solo women travellers regularly report feeling completely comfortable here.
Our local guides and 24×7 support add an extra layer of assurance throughout your Meghalaya tour. We've safely hosted hundreds of solo women travellers.
Meghalaya has a unique food culture. Khasi specialities include Jadoh (pork rice), Dohneiiong (pork with black sesame), Pumaloi (steamed rice), and Tungrymbai (fermented soybean). Shillong also has excellent cafés, bakeries, and multi-cuisine restaurants.
Our packages include breakfast daily and 3 dinners. All dietary requirements — vegetarian, Jain, gluten-free — are catered for with advance notice. Simply mention it when booking.
Fly from Delhi (DEL) to Guwahati Airport (GAU) — the most connected hub (~2 hours, IndiGo / Air India / SpiceJet operate this route frequently). From Guwahati, it's a scenic 3-hour road transfer to Shillong.
Shillong Airport (SHL) has limited direct flights from a few cities. Guwahati is always the better choice. Return airfare typically costs ₹5,000–₹12,000 depending on how far in advance you book. Our packages are land-only — we handle all transfers from Guwahati airport.
Indian citizens do not need any special permit for Meghalaya. However, you will need a valid government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar, Passport, or Driver's Licence) for certain checkpoints — especially near Dawki at the Bangladesh border.
Foreign nationals require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for some restricted areas, which Amigos Alliance assists in obtaining as part of our package arrangements. The process is straightforward and we handle all paperwork.
BSNL works most reliably across Meghalaya, including remote areas like Nongriat and Mawsynram. Airtel and Jio have good 4G coverage in Shillong and Cherrapunji. In jungle areas and caves, there is little to no signal.
We recommend downloading offline maps (Google Maps / Maps.me) before heading out. The signal blackout in the jungle is — honestly — part of the experience. Your guide always knows the way.
The trek involves approximately 3,000 stone steps down (and the same back up) through steep subtropical jungle — a total of 7–8 km round trip taking 4–5 hours. Moderate fitness is sufficient; no technical skills required.
Essentials: sturdy closed-toe trekking shoes (mandatory), 2 litres of water, energy snacks, and a towel for the natural pool. Start early (before 8 AM) to avoid heat. The return climb is the hardest part — pace yourself. Totally worth every step.
Yes — the Umngot river at Dawki is genuinely that transparent. Every photo you've seen is real — no editing needed. Boats appear to float on air above the visible riverbed.
Best experienced between October and March when water levels are moderate. In monsoon (June–September) the river turns slightly murky due to heavy upstream rainfall, so October–February gives the most crystal-clear boat ride experience. We include an early-morning slot in our packages for the best light.
Absolutely — group and corporate travel is a core specialty at Amigos Alliance. We handle hotel blocks, fleet transport, customised meal plans, team-building activities (zip-lining, cave exploration, village walks), and full on-ground coordination for groups from 10 to 200+.
Corporate clients include HUDCO, various PSUs, and private sector groups. WhatsApp or call us at +91 99998 11365 for a group Meghalaya tour quote — we respond within 2 hours.
